How to read this ranking
RCI is the Spearman rank correlation between time and price, scaled to −100…+100. Readings above +80 signal a strong uptrend (and a possible top); below −80 a strong downtrend (and a possible bottom). A cross back above −80 is a common reversal signal.
How the RCI ranking is calculated
RCI(9) from ranks, not prices
The Rank Correlation Index looks at the last nine 4-hour closes, about 36 hours of trading. Each close gets two ranks: one for its place in time and one for its place by price. RCI is the Spearman correlation between the two, 1 − 6Σd² ÷ (n(n² − 1)), scaled to −100…+100. Because only the order matters, one huge candle counts no more than a small one. That makes RCI resistant to single wicks but blind to the size of a move.
Reading the levels
Readings above +80 mean almost every recent close was higher than the one before, a strong and orderly uptrend. Below −80 is the mirror image. Many traders watch the turn more than the level: RCI rolling over from above +80 means the orderly rise has broken, and a climb back above −80 means sellers have lost their grip. A reading near zero means the recent closes have no clear direction.
RCI and RSI together
RSI measures how large the gains were compared with the losses; RCI measures how orderly the path was. High RCI with moderate RSI describes a steady grind higher. High RSI with a middling RCI describes a spike after a choppy stretch, which tends to be less durable. When both sit at extremes the move is fast and clean, and when they disagree the chart is usually worth a closer look before drawing any conclusion.
